The SANASA Federation celebrated “SANASA Week” from February 22nd to 28th, 2026, marking the historic reorganization of the cooperative movement. This annual commemoration traces its roots back to the pivotal convention held at the Walgama Credit Cooperative Society in the Kegalle District, where isolated credit societies—operating since 1906—were unified under the “SANASA” name.
To honor this legacy, the SANASA Federation organizes various commemorative programs across the island each year. As part of the 2026 celebrations, a special regional program was held on February 26th at the Kurunegala Town Hall.
The event saw the participation of Chairmen, Board Members, and staff from SANASA Unions and Primary Societies representing the Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Puttalam districts.
Two keynote addresses highlighted the day’s proceedings:
- Mr. Wasantha Gunasekara, the North Western Province Commissioner of Cooperative Development and Registrar of Societies, delivered a lecture on “Local Economic Needs and the Cooperative Movement.”
- Dr. L.B. Dasanayake, Chairman of the SANASA Federation, shared insights on “The Future of the Cooperative Movement within the Global Economy.”
